Beyond Resilience: Masterclasses - Expanding Humanities Themes and Cultural Representation in Historical Documentary Film [to Support the Next Generation and Deepen the Academic Rigor of Historic Nonfiction Cinema, Firelight Media, the Premiere Destination for Cinema by and About Communities of Color, Will Engage Bipoc Filmmakers With Experiences Led and Advised by Archivists, Historians, Recognized Historical Documentary Filmmakers, and Other Humanities Scholars. We Would Develop and Offer a Series of Virtual Master Classes, Offered to Filmmakers and Others Nationally, That Address Key Topics Including the Integration of Humanities Themes Into Documentary Films, Interview Techniques With Humanities Scholars, the Strategic Use of Archival Images and Text, and Methods of Popularizing Crucial Historical Narratives in Film] [purpose: the Purpose of This Grant Is to Retain Five Positions and Develop Programming for Filmmakers on How to Integrate Humanities Themes Into Documentary Films at a Non-profit Filmmaking Organization in New York. Activities to Be Performed: Five Staff Positions Will Be Retained in Support of Firelight Media's Mission to Foster a Diverse Field of Professional Documentary Filmmakers. Staff Will Develop a Series of Virtual Workshops for Documentary Filmmakers of Color That Focus on Producing deeply Researched and Historically Accurate Documentary Films. Each Workshop Will Include Expert-advisors, Such as Scholars, Historians, and Archivists, That Will Provide a Survey of the Best Methods of Integrating Rigorous Scholarship Into Historical Documentaries. Expected Outcomes: funding Will Create a New Series of Humanities Workshops for Documentary Filmmakers and Retain Humanities Jobs That Were Threatened by the Pandemic. Intended Beneficiaries: a Broad, Diverse Community of Documentary Filmmakers at Varying Stages of Their Careers, Particularly Filmmakers of Color, and With Varying Degrees of Experience With or Interest in Engaging Historical Humanities Themes Though Cinematic Content.
