Reducing Energy Consumption and Improving the Control of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (cecs), Including Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Contributes to the Development of Energy-efficient High-performance Water Reclamation Processes. Carollo Engineers Has Teamed Up With the Eastern Municipal Water District (emwd), Cal Poly Pomona, Dupont, and Aquacycl to Extend Testing of a Novel Wastewater Treatment Process for Water Reuse That Diverts Carbon Through Bypassing Biological Secondary Treatment. Diverted Carbon Is Treated Anaerobically Providing Additional Renewable Energy and Less Biosolids for Disposal. the Process Consists of Ultrafiltration (UF) of Primary Effluent, Closed Circuit Reverse Osmosis (ccro), and a Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) That Treats Ro Concentrate to Recover Energy and Destroy Contaminants of Emerging Concern. the Proposed Project Objectives Are to Demonstrate Long Term Operation of the Ultrafiltration, Closed Circuit Reverse Osmosis, and Microbial Fuel Cell Combination as a Viable Solution in Reducing Energy Consumption and Improving Contaminants of Emerging Concern Removal, for Producing High Quality Effluent for Groundwater Recharge. the Proposed Project Will Build on Existing Infrastructure From an On-going Project. Twenty Wastewater Quality Parameters and the Removal of 19 Categories of Contaminants of Emerging Concern Will Be Tracked Including Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances. the Impact of High Organic Strength Ultrafiltration Permeate on Closed Circuit Reverse Osmosis Recovery Level and Cleaning Strategies Will Be Investigated, Along With Ultrafiltration and Ro Membrane Life Expectancies. It Is Anticipated That the Proposed Ultrafiltration, Closed Circuit Reverse Osmosis, and Microbial Fuel Cell System, in Comparison With Conventional Treatment Configurations, Will Demonstrate 45-PERCENT Reduction in Energy Consumption and 30-PERCENT Increase in Renewable Energy Production. a Cost Model Will Be Developed to Assess the Impact of Facility Size on System Scale-up. a Technoeconomic Analysis Will Be Conducted to Identify Key Factors in Design, Operation, and Maintenance for Advancing the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) From Pilot-scale (TRL6) to System Demonstration (TRL7).
