Zapata County Proposes Site Improvements to an Existing Visitor Rest Area Pull-out and Overlook Site, Located on U.s. Highway 83, Just North of San Ygnacio, Texas. the Site Is Owned by the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) and Is Managed by Both Txdot and Zapata County. It Holds Many Unique Scenic Qualities and Has Direct Ties to the Historic Rio Grande River Crossing Site of El Camino Real De Los Tejas National Historic Trail (NHT). at This Site, Visitors Can Experience the Only Existing and Uninterrupted Viewpoint of the Rio Grande River, Overlook Across the Us Mexico Border, and Observe a Landscape That Remains Largely Unimpaired by Any Modern-day Intrusions. This Is the Only Site From San Antonio, Texas to San Ygnacio, Texas That Allows the Public a Clear View of the River and the Us Mexico Border.onsite Amenities Currently Include a Large Deteriorating Asphalt Pullout Off the Highway, and Undefined Parking Area, an Older Picnic Shelter, and a Lower-level Overlook Viewing Area That Is Overrun With Noxious Weeds. Improvements Will Include: Re-paving of the Pullout, Parking Area, and Short Pathway Along the Picnic Shelter Leading to the Overlook the Addition of Two Handicap Parking Spaces, Striping of the Parking Area Painting of the Covered Picnic Shelter and Site Improvements of the Overlook Viewing Area, Including Weed Removal, Leveling, and Resurfacing Using an Ada Compliant Natural Surface Material. Interpretive Media for This Site Was Recently Completed by the Nps-national Trails Office. the Panels Were Installed Onsite in 2021.
