Project Title Next Generation Fire Spread Modeling to Inform the Management of Climate and Fire Driven Ecological Transformations in the Rio Grande Basinproject Dates 09 01 2022 08 23 2024AWARD Purpose the Objective of the Project Is to Use High Resolution 3D Fuels and Next Generation Fire Behavior Models to Provide Scenarios That Inform Management Decisions to Resist, Accept, or Direct Climate Driven, Fire Catalyzed Ecological Transformations Activities to Be Performed We Propose to Apply Next Generation, 3D Fuels Models and Physics Based Fire Spread Modeling Developed at Los Alamos National Labs Firetec and Quic Fire, Fig 2 to Increase the Understanding of Fire Behavior in Forests or Former Forest Conditions Identified by Managers as Particularly Challenging or Important for Ecological Transformation Linn Et Al 2020 We Will Build Local High Resolution 3D Fuel Vegetation, Fig 2 Models That Not Only Capture Fire Atmospheric Feedback, But Provide Unique Capability of Integrating Fire Behavior to Mechanistic and Spatially Explicit Fire Effects O Brien Et Al 2018 the 3D Canopy Structure and Vegetation That Drives Local Fuel Moisture Conditions Will Help Quantify Possible Fire Behavior to Guidemanagement Decisions We Focus on the Three Ecosystem Settings Within the Rad Resist, Accept, or Direct Transformation, Schuurman, Et Al 2020 Framework Deliverables and Expected Outcomes Our Management Partners NPS and Usfs Will Benefit From Improved Fire Spread Model Output in Key Ecological Settings That Can Be Incorporated Into Planning and Fire and Resource Management,including for Recovery of Endangered Species E G , Jemez Mountains Salamander and Mexican Spotted Owl Outcomes and Products Will Be Developed Throughout Co Production With Site Managers, and Then Communicated and Delivered to the Broader Community Through Face to Face Updates, SW Fire Consortium Webinars, the TNC Burned Area Learning Network, Conference Presentations, and Scientific Publications the Model Results Will Be Used for Climate Based Scenario Planning for Band and Surrounding Partners at the Completion of This Project This Approach, in Turn, Will Be Incorporated Into Future Updates of Fire Management Plans Intended Beneficiaries NPS and Usfs, SW Fire Consortium, TNC Burned Area Learning Network, Broader Communitysubrecipient Activities Los Alamos National Laboratory
