The Understory Initiative

The U.s. Fish and Wildlife Services Coastal Program (USFWS) Is Partnering With the Institute Forapplied Ecology (IAE) to Restore Approximately 15 Acres of Rare Coastal Prairie Within the Crookpoint Unit of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Project Activities, Which Began in 2020,INCLUDE Invasive and Sensitive Species Mapping, Invasive Species Control Activities, Planting of Nativespecies, and Monitoring of Project Effectiveness. One Invasive Species of Great Concern, Yellow Bushlupine (lupinus Arboreus), Is Hybridizing With Native Lupines, Primarily With Lupinus Littoralis. Howl. Arboreus and Its Hybrids Are Impacting the Native Plant and Pollinator Community at Crook Pointneeds Investigation to Inform Control and Restoration Efforts. Therefore, Usfws Will Work Withthe Understory Initiative (TUI) to Map Hybrid Lupines, Create an Identification Guide for Hybridlupines. to Complement This Work, Iae Will Contract Tui (separate Agreement) to Documentpollinating Insects Foraging on Lupine Species. in Addition to Working at Crook Point, Tui Willinclude Lupines at the Adjacent Pistol River State Scenic Viewpoint (pistol River). This Will Allow Fora Greater Sample Size and Therefore More Robust Conclusions and Recommendations for Managementat Crook Point.the Understory Initiative Will Complete the Following Tasks as Part of This Agreement With USFWS:1. Identify and Map Hybrid Lupine (L. Arboreus X L. Littoralis Hybrid, L. Arboreus X L. Rivularishybrid, L. Rivularis X L. Littoralis Hybrid) Populations at Crook Point and Pistol River (thesite). Described Species (L. Arboreus, L. Littoralis, L. Rivularis) Will Not Be MAPPED.2. Document Distinguishing Traits (stature, Habit, Leaf Color, Leaf Shape, Stem Texture, Flowerlength, Flower Color) of Individuals Representative of Each Lupine Species Unit (L. Arboreus, L.littoralis, L. Rivularis, L. Arboreus X L. Littoralis Hybrid, L. Arboreus X L. Rivularis Hybrid, L.rivularis X L. Littoralis Hybrid) at the Site and Develop an Identification Guide to Help Landmanagers Distinguish Hybrid Lupines From Described Lupine Species.this Data Will Enable Land Managers to Make Informed Decisions About Hybrid Lupine Removal Andpollinator Habitat Preservation at Crook Point.
