The Purpose of This Project Is to Support a Conservation Effort in the Rungwa-kizigo-muhesi Game Reserve Complex, Nyerere National Park, Udzungwa Mountains National Park, and the Kilombero Valley, by Improving Human-elephant Coexistence and Enhancing Local Livelihoods. as Part of the Larger Western Tanzania Region and Selous-niassa Region Savanna Elephant Strongholds, This Landscape Is Home to an Estimated 31,000 Elephants. This Project Is Intended to Conserve African Savanna Elephants and Their Habitat by Addressing the Impacts of Human-elephant Conflict (HEC) and Poaching. Specific Activities Include: (1) Monitoring and Mitigating Hec Through Community-based Data Collection, Beehive and Solar-powered Strobe Light Fence Construction, and Improved Crop Storage; (2) Training Rangers to Document and Report Hec Incidents in the Communities; (3) Conducting Community Engagement and Outreach, Including Swahili-language Human-elephant Coexistence Films; and (4) Supporting a Community Loan and Insurance Program and Alternative Livelihoods Development.
