Malama Maunalua S MM Project, With Support From the Hawai I Fish Habitat Partnership, Is to Grow Its Habitat Restoration Project in Maunalua Bay S Nearshore Reef Flat in Particular, MM Seeks to Continue to Innovate Methods to Improve Water Quality in the Nearshore Reef Flat to Improve Habitat Quality for Fish, Coral, and Native Limu Seagrass MM Will 1 Augment the Extent of Our Invasive Alien Algae Iaa Removal Effort to Focus on New Hot Spot Sites With the Priority Area of High Iaa Algae Biomass Volunteers Will Participate in Iaa Removal Efforts in Locations No Previously Managed 2 Scale Up Our Strategy to Use the Native Collector Sea Urchin as a Biological Method for Removing Maintaining Iaa Growth, in Partnership With Division of Aquatic Resources Dar Urchins Will Be Provided by Dar, and Tested in Cages Placed in the Nearshore Habitat to Determine Their Effectiveness at Removing Iaa Eventually, a Larger Number of Urchins Will Be Released in the Bay in Locations Determined Based on the Information Ascertained From the Previous Testing 3 Launch a Pilot Project Using Pacific Oysters to Improve Nearshore Water Quality, in Partnership With University of Hawaii at Hilo Pacific Aquaculture and Coastal Resource Center Parc and Waterkeeper Alliance the Project Will Consist of Purchasing Baby Oysters From Parc and Deploying Them Off Docks and Walls Around Maunalua Bay in Partnership With Local Residents the Project Will Help Determine Labor Burdens, Viability, Oyster Response to Bay Conditions, and Be Used for Significant Outreach All of the Work Will Take Place in Maunalua Bay, and Be Closely Monitored by MM Staff the Results of the Work Will Not Only Inform Future Efforts by MM, But Inform Efforts by Other Non Profits and the Government Statewide
