Description:this Agreement Provides Funding Under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) to Rowan University. the Recipient Will Provide Technical Assistance (e.g., Information, Training, Tools) to Businesses to Help Them Develop and Adopt Source Reduction Practices (also Known as Pollution Prevention (P2)). P2 Means Reducing or Eliminating Pollutants From Entering Any Waste Stream or Otherwise Being Released Into the Environment Prior to Recycling, Treatment, or Disposal. P2 Practices Can Help Businesses Save Money by Reducing Their Resource Use, Expenditures, Waste and Liability Costs, While at the Same Time Reducing Their Environmental Footprint and Helping to Protect Human Health and the Environment. Specifically, the Proposed Project Will Reduce the Emissions From the Recovery, Purification, and Use of Specialty Chemicals Currently in Use in the Electric Power and Microelectronics Industries. Rowan University Will Provide Technical Assistance and Training to a Specialty Chemical Provider, New Jersey's Electric Utility, and Industrial Partners in the Microelectronics Sector. This Project Will Reduce Energy Utilization, Material Use, Hazardous Chemical Use, and Achieve Cost Savings for Project Beneficiaries. Activities:the Recipient Is Currently Conducting Research With Its Industrial Partner, Efc Gases and Advanced Materials, Which Is the Largest Domestic Supplier of Sulfur Hexaflouride (SF6) to Electric Utilities. SF6 Is Used in Various Applications, Including as an Insulator in Circuit Breakers, Switchgear, Gas-insulated Substations, and Transmission Lines. SF6 Is Also Used as a Cleaning and Etching Gas in the Semiconductor Industry. the Recipient Will Use the Results of This Research to Provide Technical Assistance and Training to New Jersey's Electric Utility, Pseg. the Recipient Will Also Provide Technical Assistance to Industrial Partners, Such as Solvay, in the Microelectronics Sector. Through This Project, the Recipient Expects to Reduce Hazardous Chemical Use, and Achieve Cost Savings for Project Beneficiaries. Case Studies and Best Management Practices Will Be Shared With the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Electric Power Research Institute, and Trade Associations in Order to Amplify the Lessons Learned to the Chemical Manufacturing, Engineering, and Formulations Sector. Subrecipient:no Subawards Are Included in This Assistance Agreement.outcomes:the Recipient Is Expected to Report on P2 Performance Measures (outputs and Outcomes) and Note Who Will Benefit From the Technical Assistance as Well as Commit to Following-up With Facilities to Find Out Whether the Technical Assistance Was Adopted and Implemented. the Anticipated Deliverables Include: Two Design Case Studies and One P2 Success Story. the Recipient Will Prepare an Initial Case Study on the Existing Process With Improvements and the Second Case Study on the New Technology. the Initial Case Study Would Be Presenting an Optimized Design of a Batch Cryogenic Distillation Column Which Its Partner Is Currently Using. the Second Case Study Would Focus on a New Process That Will Be Developed Based on Published Research. the Expected Outcomes Include: - Reduction of Hazardous Wastes: Facility-level ~ 630 Lbs/yr; - Water Conserved: Facility-level ~12,000 Gallons/yr; - Cost Savings: Facility-level ~ 2.3 Million Dollars/yr; the Intended Beneficiaries Include: - Efc Gases and Advanced Materials - Pseg - Solvay - Tentative List of an Additional 12 Facilities in the Electric Power and Microelectronics Sectors - Air Liquide - Electric Power Research Institute
