Description:this Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) Project Will Provide Technical Assistance (e.g., Information, Training, Tools) to Businesses to Help Them Develop and Adopt Source Reduction Practices (also Known as Pollution Prevention (P2)). P2 Means Reducing or Eliminating Pollutants From Entering Any Waste Stream or Otherwise Being Released Into the Environment Prior to Recycling, Treatment, or Disposal. P2 Practices Can Help Businesses Save Money by Reducing Their Resource Use, Expenditures, Waste and Liability Costs, While at the Same Time Reducing Their Environmental Footprint and Helping to Protect Human Health and the Environment. Specifically, the Project Work Will Provide Technical Assistance to the Astrazeneca Pharmaceutical Facility in Wilmington, De by Analyzing Their Manufacturing Processes. in Their Technical Assistance, Rowan University Will Use Innovative Techniques of Enhancing Process Sustainability, Scalability, and Safer Design With the Aid of Machine Learning, and Computational Process Design. the Focus of the Technical Assistance Will Be to Provide Alternative Safer Chemicals and Low-energy and Low-emission Technologies During the Early Phases of Process Design. From This Effort, They Will Develop Best Management Practices That Will Be Shared With the Pharmaceutical and Chemical Manufacturing Sectors.activities:the Priorities for P2 Technical Assistance (information, Training, and Tools) Aligns With the Program's National Emphasis Areas (neas). Specifically, the Project Will Address Nea #2 (chemical Manufacturing, Processing, and Formulations). in Addition to This, Our Efforts Also Align With the Goals, #1-CLEANER and Healthier Environment; #2-MORE Effective Partnerships; and #3-GREATER Certainty, Compliance, and Effectiveness, Listed in the Epa's Strategic Plan. Specifically, the Grantee Anticipates Providing: Outputs: - Documenting the Environmental Justice (EJ) Demographics in Neighboring Areas of All the Astrazeneca Facilities Provided P2 Technical Assistance via the P2 Ej Tool - In-person Visits, Virtual Discussions and Updates With Our Industrial Partners, and Conducting Semi-annual Review Sessions - Dissemination Efforts Resulting in at Least 4 Presentations at Regional/national Conferences, 3 Journal Publications, and Several Press Releases/newsletter Articles - Machine Learning Tools for Life Cycle Inventory and Environmental Impacts Prediction - a Case Study Using New and Safer Alternative Chemicals, Comparison of Performance as Compared to the Ongoing Process in the Partnering Facility Resulting in an Easy to Understand Fact Sheet - Outreach to Schools in Underserved Communities to Emphasize the Importance of the Safer Choice of Chemicals, Solvents, and Use of Data Science for Extrapolating Information Rowan Strongly Believes That the P2 Methods and Outcomes Can Translate to Other Top Chemical Waste Generating Industries in the United States and Beyond. Their Ongoing Collaboration With Astrazeneca Helped Us in Understanding the Needs and Limitations of Pharmaceutical Processes.
