Purpose: the Purpose of This Grant Is to Support the Purchase and Integration of Equipment Critical to Designing and Testing Novel Chemical Compounds That Target Drug-resistant Cancers and Advance Scientific Understanding of Chemical Drug Resistance, at Ferris State University. Activities to Be Performed: Key Activities Include, First, the Purchase and Installation of the Following Equipment at the University: 500 MHZ NMR Spectrometer, 125 - 200 Kva Generator(s), Benchtop LCMS, Flow Cytometer, Benchtop NMR, Particle Size Analyzer, Chemical Fume Hood(s), Gas Chromatograph. the Second Key Activity of the Project Is the Hiring of a Lab Technician to, Among Others, Help Develop and Establish Training Protocols on the Equipment. Expected Outcomes: Purchase and Installation of the Equipment, the Hiring of a Technician, and User Instrument Training Are All Critical to Improving the Organization?s Capacity to Measure, Analyze, Synthesize, Process, and Fabricate Novel Chemical Compounds That Target Drug-resistant Cancers and to Advancing the Scientific Understanding of Chemical Drug Resistance, Including Processes of Degradation That Impact Drug Stability. This Funding Will Facilitate the University's Long-term Goals of Building on Its Current Strengths in Cancer Research, Easing a Biomedical Workforce Gap With Enhanced Preparation of Students Toward Stem and Research-related Careers, and Bringing Parity of Opportunity for Research Innovations to a Rural Institution. Intended Beneficiaries: the Main Beneficiary Will Be the Local Community, as 92 % of Ferris University Students Come From Michigan and the Vast Majority of Graduates Remain In-state. Furthermore, Several of the Chronic Diseases Targeted for Study (e.g., Cancer, Diabetes, Heart Disease) Disproportionately Affect Rural and Underrepresented Citizens, Both in Michigan and Beyond. as Such, Scientific Developments Resultant From This Funding Should Impact Beyond the University and State.
