To Analyze Data on Wildland Fuels in Areas Affected by Hurricane Helene (southern Appalachian Forested Region), Run Computer Models of Fire Behavior, and Work With Managers to Understand Hurricane Damage and Effects on Future Fire Management and Improve Fuels Monitoring Efforts. Damage Caused by Hurricane Helene Is Profound and We Now Can Do an Accurate Assessment of the Hurricane Damage, Including Change in Hazardous Fuels Conditions Using New Technologies (terrestrial Laser Scanning), Field Sampling, and Emerging Fire Behavior Models and Analyze Them Using Sophisticated Computer Programs. Data Will Be Translated and New 3D Fuels Metrics for Use in Next-generation Physics-based Fire Behavior Models and Work With Management (co-production) to Examine Fire Behavior in Damaged Areas. This Will Build Pathways to Link These Unique (damaged Forest) Fuels Data to Fire Behavior Models and Provide Estimates of Fire Behavior in These Damaged Areas. Costs Cover Salary, Equipment and Supplies for Research. the Cooperator Comprises a Partnership of Three Research Universities in New Mexico.
