Plastics and Synthetic Dyes Are Widely Used Across Industries But Contribute to Severe Environmental, Health, and Economic Challenges. Petroleum-based Plastics Release Over 1.5 Gigatons of Greenhouse Gases Annually, Accumulate in Ecosystems as Persistent Microplastics, and Expose Humans and Wildlife to Harmful Chemicals. Synthetic Dyes Exacerbate These Problems by Leaching Toxic Substances Into the Environment and Slowing the Breakdown of Biodegradable Plastics. These Pollutants Harm Ecosystems, Disrupt Food Chains, and Cause Significant Health Concerns Such as Infertility, Organ Development Failures, and Hormonal Disruptions. the Issue Extends Beyond Consumer Waste to Agricultural Waste Management, as Byproducts Like Whey, Soybean Meal, and Corn Waste Are Often Underutilized, Leading to Economic Inefficiencies and Environmental Strains. Research Is Urgently Needed to Develop Scalable, Sustainable Alternatives to Petroplastics and Synthetic Dyes That Reduce Reliance on Fossil Fuels, Mitigate Pollution, and Transform Agricultural Byproducts Into Valuable Resources. Addressing These Challenges Will Promote Sustainability, Support Economic Resilience, and Foster Healthier Ecosystems and Communities.this Project Employs a Unique Fermentation Process to Convert Agricultural Byproducts Such as Dairy Whey, Soybean Meal, and Corn Waste Into Biodegradable Plastics (PHAS) and Natural Pigments. the Method Uses Sugars and Proteins From These Waste Streams as Feedstocks, Enabling the Simultaneous Production of Eco-friendly Materials. to Ensure Efficiency, the Approach Optimizes Microbial Strains and Fermentation Conditions to Maximize Production Yields While Minimizing Resource Use and Waste. This Innovative Process Leverages Existing Agricultural Byproducts, Avoiding the Need for Additional Land or Water Resources and Significantly Reducing the Environmental Impact of Material Production. by Transforming Underutilized Waste Into Valuable Products, This Approach Addresses Critical Issues in Agriculture, Manufacturing, and Waste Management. the Data and Results From This Research Will Be Shared Through Collaborations With Industry Stakeholders, Workshops, and Educational Initiatives to Encourage Adoption of the Technology Across Sectors, Including Agriculture, Packaging, and Plastics Manufacturing.the Ultimate Goal of This Research Is to Replace Petroleum-based Plastics and Synthetic Dyes With Biodegradable, Bio-based Alternatives, Thereby Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Pollution, and Exposure to Harmful Chemicals. the Project Seeks to Transform Agricultural Byproducts Into Valuable Resources, Creating Economic Opportunities for Farmers and Agricultural Processors While Addressing Critical Environmental Concerns.
