This Project Will Lead to the Development of Novel Ozone Nanobubble Technology Thatcan Dramatically Improve Food Safety Systems and Extend Product Shelf-life of Postharvest-washed Fresh Tree and Pome Fruits, Initially Focusing on Apples. This Technology Will Provide Additional and Needed Protections for the Vast Economic Investments Made During the Decade-long Process of Growing Trees to Maturity for High-profitability, Innovative Apple Varietals. Due to the Increasing Specialization of the Apple Industry, Devastating Brand Damage Can Result From Negative Consumer Events Such as a Foodborne Illness, Recalls, Decreased Quality, and Premature Decay and Spoilage. the Technology Developed Under This Phase Ii Sbir Proposal Offers a Cost-competitive, More Effective Alternative to the Current Postharvest Wash Methods.postharvest Wash Is a Critical Control Point in Fresh Produce Processing for Reducing or Eliminating Pathogens and Other Field-acquired Contaminations That Can Result in Foodborne Illness Outbreaks or Fungal Infections That Impact Shelf-life. the Proposed Technology Installs Directly Into Existing Packing Lines and Uses Ozone Nanobubble-infused Water to Wash Apples via Application as a Spray to the Surface of the Product or Directly to the Wash Water in Which the Product Is Immersed. the High Concentration Ozone Nanobubble Wash Water Can Destroy Bacteria and Other Harmful Pathogens on the Surface of the Product and in the Wash Water, Effectively Preventing Cross-contamination.this Project Will Validate the Effectiveness of Ozone Nanobubbles as a Postharvest Intervention for Apples Through a Series of Microbial Experiments and Pilot Farm Demonstrations That Measure the Impact of Ozone Nanobubbles on Pathogen Neutralization. These Efforts Will Ultimately Lead to the Production of Innovative Technology With the Potential to Make Fresh Tree and Pome Fruits Safer in a Way That Is More Effective, Cost-competitive, and Better for Workers and the Environment.
