The Mission of Akron Summit Community Action, Inc. (ASCA) Is to Reduce Poverty and Promote Self-sufficiency in Summit County. Asca Is a Private, Non-profit, Tax Exempt 501 (C) 3 Corporation. Asca Is an Anti- Poverty Social Service Agency That Represents Summit County. Asca Offers Various Resources to Assist Individuals and Families. Asca Has a Comprehensive System of Education, Training and Other Means That Are Central to the Services Offered. Asca Has an Operating Budget of Over $15 Million Dollars and Over 230 Employees. Asca Continues to Make Great Efforts to Deliver Innovative and Impactful Programming to Meet the Community's Needs. One of the Well- Established Programs That Asca Offers Is the Foster Grandparent Program (FGP). the FGP Is Part of the National Senior Corps, a Network of Programs Administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). the FGP Receives Operating Funds From CNCS. the Asca FGP Program Provides Volunteer Opportunities for Low-income Individuals Age 55 and Older Who Are Capable of Assisting Children/youth With Special or Exceptional Needs. the FGP Helps Volunteers Remain Mentally and Physically Active by Participating in Community Service. the Dual Purpose of the FGP Is to Improve the Lives of Eligible Volunteers as Well as the Children They Are Assigned to by Bringing Them Together in an Appropriate Setting (education, Social Service, Medical or Similar Setting). an Estimated 76 FGP Volunteers Will Serve the Assigned Children. Out of the 76 FGP Volunteers, 73 Will Be Placed in Outcome Assignments. the Foster Grandparents Work One on One With Two or More Children Who Have Special and or Exceptional Needs. Depending on the Child's Age the Activities Can Include Recognition of Letters and Numbers. the Foster Grandparent Volunteers Also Help Children Learn How to Read, Assist With Academic Work, Tutor Children and Serve as a Mentor. the FGP Volunteers Help Children Learn Various Skills, Increase Positive Self-esteem/social Emotional Development and Improve in Literacy/numeracy Achievement. the Goal Is to Contribute to School Readiness, and Provide Support for Academic Improvement. the Foster Grandparents Perform Service Activities Through a Network of 23 Volunteer Stations (a Public Agency, Secular or Faith Based Private Non-profit Organization, or Proprietary Health Care Organization). the Volunteer Stations Include the Head Start/early Head Start Program, Akron Public Schools, Akron Children's Hospital, Ymca's, Salvation Army and Phoenix School for Adjudicated Youth. the Primary Focus Area of the FGP Is Education. at the End of the 12-MONTH Performance Period the Assigned Students Will Improve in Academics (literacy and or Numeracy Skills) and or Demonstrate Gains in Emotional/social Development, Depending on the Age. the CNCS Federal Investment of $355,568 Will Be Supplemented by $70,896.00 Which Includes Program Income, Local/state, In-kind Support, Private Donations and Other Sources.
