The Lenawee County Department on Aging Started the Foster Grandparent Program in 1938, Providing a Wonderful Oppurtunity for Low Income Seniors to Interact and Encourage at Risk Children. the Program Expanded Into Monroe County in 1984, Then Hillsdale County in 2000, With the Primary Funding Source Approval of Osa. the Monroe County and Lenawee County Isd's Also Provide Funding. the Foster Grandparents Are Given 40 Hours of Pre-service Training, Then Placed Within Sites Including; Special Needs Classrooms, Headstarts, and Other Locations Where the Most Need Has Been Identified. There Is Also Oppurtunities for Summer Placements, Including Boys and Girls Club, Libraries, Day Camps, Ymca, and the 1:1 Six Week Summer Reading Program, That Is a Structured Mentoring Concept Started in 1983. Inservice Training Meetings Are Done on a Monthly Basis in Each County, to Provide Ongoing Information and Support for the Foster Grandparents. Evaluations, and Information Data on the Foster Grandparents Wants and Needs as Well as the Impact on the Children They Serve Is Collected and Reviewed to Ensure That the Correct and Ongoing Needs Are Met. an Estimated 35 FGP Volunteers Will Serve. of This Number 35 Will Be Placed in Outcome Based Assignments. Some of Their Activities Will Include Reading, Math, Social Interaction, and Writing. the Primary Focus Area of This Project Is to Support and Assist in These Areas. at the End of the Three Year Grant, the Children Assigned to the FGP Volunteers Will Show Improvement in the Areas of Definition. the Current State Allocation Is $200,554; With the Local Match Amount of $46,386.
